Doubt for Trust

Dec 7, 2025    Andrew Kirschner

This Christmas message invites us into one of the most profound theological truths of our faith: the doctrine of the incarnation—God becoming flesh in Jesus Christ. Through the parallel stories of Zechariah and Mary in Luke 1, we discover a powerful contrast between doubt and trust. Zechariah, a priest who should have known better, doubted God's promise despite witnessing an angelic visitation, while young Mary, a humble virgin from Nazareth, trusted completely even when the promise seemed impossible. The message challenges us to examine our own response to God's word: do we operate from doubt, leaning on our own limited understanding, or do we trust in God's wisdom and power? We're reminded that questions aren't the problem—Zechariah and Mary both asked 'how?'—but the heart behind our questions matters. Are we seeking understanding within faith, or questioning from unbelief? This Christmas season offers us a divine exchange: we can bring our doubts to God and receive His gift of trust in return. By understanding that Jesus is fully God and fully human—one person with two complete natures—we grasp why Christmas matters so deeply. The incarnation isn't just a sweet story about a baby; it's the cosmic reality that God Himself entered our world to save us from our sins.
